Hi. I acquired a beamish last year and in the process of getting it working again. The question I have is - what do I need to do to get it road legal? It was registered from new in May 1981, it’s not been road taxed since 1984, I’ve got the V5c and registered in my name.
Do I need lights, speedo etc? And do I need to register/tax it as a vintage?
I’ve tried googling but I’m going round in circles!
Many thanks Derek
HI Derek,
Thanks for the reply, I have just fitted pre 76 TS250 sprockets and chain to my bike as it won't be seeing the dirt again while I own it and will just be used for very short (3 to 4 miles) trips to the coast.
I am waiting for one of the clubs full ignition systems to drop through my door today or tomorrow as mine packed up and the wiring was in a terrible state.
All the best
Steve
HI Derek,
I see this is a few months old but hope it may be useful to reply as I have done similar recently.
I decided to register my Beamish for the road, and with help from Lee it was quite simple.
When applying for a V5c I had to apply for historic status separately, which again was straightforward.
On checking with DVLA , it stated that I needed the following :
1---- Horn
2---- Stop Light
3---- Rear reflector
4---- Speedometer
At the time I didn't have a separate feed from my magneto so bought a small 12V power pack and wired that in. The speedo was a small GPS type, similar to a cycle unit.
The number plate would also need to have the correct size lettering, I used white on black as it is historic.
It would appear that lights as such aren't required but of course if you were out when the conditions were dull/dusky you may have problems with legality.
AS with any advice it is best to read the definitive criteria from DVLA themselves as you do tend to see a lot of incorrect advice from different sources.
If any of this appears incorrect please let me know as I am no expert!
Regards
Steve
