| Dating the Black Engine Beamish
Dating can be done by a combination of the following:
- Frame number
- Tank decals
- Frame decals
- Frame modification
- Steel or aluminium tank
Even with all of this information it is still a little hit and miss without
the frame number. These bikes were made for trialing and took some serious
knocks in their time. If a previous owner replaced a dented aluminium tank
with a steel one it can throw you out from your dating process!
I have seen some bikes with a replacement frame which can also put you off
the scent.

1978
The all new RL325 was announced and put on sale. The
frame had a 'loop' over the rear mudguard and had a steel tank with a
black stripe and 'Suzuki' decal. Head and barrel both black wiht
'325cc' cast on the barrel.

1979
The 'new' RL250N was introduced. This model had a steel tank with
'Beamish Suzuki RL250' decal and no stripe. It also had a Union Jack
decal by the filler cap. Still had the 'loop' over the rear
mudguard. Head and barrel silver. The barrels were sleeved
325's and had the '325cc' casting ground off.
The RL325 still as 1978.
Part way through 1979 tanks on both the RL325 and the RL250 were
changed to aluminium and the decal was 'Beamish Suzuki' in black letters
with a white outline. Later that year the 'loop' over the rear
mudguard was removed. |

1979/1980
Late 1979 and 1980 with the frame 'loop' gone, two lugs were welded
just beyond the rear shock mountings to secure the mudguard and
silencer. The frame beyond the shock mounts tilts up slightly.
Tank decals as before 'Beamish Suzuki' in black letters with a white
outline. |

1980/1981
The tank decal was 'Beamish Suzuki' just in black and the black
stripe was dropped. The 'whitehawk' frame decal was changed from the
previous red/black/white to black/sliver. The frame beyond the rear
shocks now straight from mid 1980 and the barrel on the 250 now black with
the head silver. The RL325 still has black barrel and head. |
